so, what comes after 10??

after my 10TH GOLD MEDAL four years ago i made a comeback this year to clinch my 11th Gold medal at the Nationals.
it feels great to be represented alongside with international athletes like J and Y who were both Thailand and Indonesia's ex national players respectively.
it was especially a pleasant surprise to meet with J this time as we found out we were actually in the same weight category in the 2003 SEA Games and lost to the same opponent who was the eventual winner of that Games. 9 years later we met again in Singapore, this time representing the same martial art school.
it was a great night for ZEN school which went home with 5 major prizes and i was glad i contributed to it!
once again i proved i am the best of my time - in fact, best for a long long time.. i miss the feeling of winning, i miss being the Champion..

tick, tock, clock is ticking..

time is going by day by day.. it is getting nearer and nearer to the competition day. at the same time, as each day passes by it means my holidays are nearing the end too. the former is getting me all excited while the latter is making me super sian. training this week in ZEN school has been quite good. feel like i am back on form slowly but surely. decided to replay some of my competition videos just to remind myself of how i used to fight! by watching those videos, i must say i am quite impressed by myself. hohoho.

back to basics

old school training in the park/open space/concrete floors with SY in HK is quite funny at times. feels like two oldies kicking the targets with all their might and then patting each others' back saying "yes you are still doing great!" hahaha..

well it is back to basics - no fancy gym with full length mirrors and nice tkd mats - only ourselves, the strange stares from passer-bys and enough targets for us to get by. :) if i do win in this Nationals i will have to share half a medal with SY - for he is the one sending me text messages like "DONT SLACK LET'S KICK SOME TARGETS!"

不老的传说

Singapore TKD's 不老的传说 was in HK this week, am really surprised he actually asked to have dinner together. of course it is more of 恭敬不如从命.. glad he enjoyed the awesome Teo Chew tze char i brought him and his family to.

是帅的 lor!

it is not 夸张 at all to say that i grew up literally looking at him! this is the exact same picture which was mounted on the wall of the TKD national training center.. i would look at this along with the pictures of the rest of the seniors during training and aspire to be like them.well i guess i sort of came close to becoming like them in a way.. since i made it to one SEA Games and came back with a medal??.. hmm. anyways that is so not the point, the 重点 is, KJ sir was (and still is) damn 帅! ..他是我童年时的偶像!!! i very buay paiseh-ly asked KJ sir to post his 1993 SEA Games photos on his FB wall for my viewing pleasure.. heh!

一场欢喜, 一场空

sian... the training we have been waiting for did not happen in the end. apparently HKU flew kite and the entire exchange programme in HK was cancelled. all the effort of getting people to help bring over my tkd belt and guards from Singapore were wasted. to think SY and i even bought new adidas handmitts and shoe! :( well, guess i was still glad i met with LS and SY for dinner.. SY introduced us to his new '马子'.. still cannot believe he used that term on his girlfriend!!

a training to prepare for a training

LS is bringing her SP TKD team to HK for an exchange programme with HKU next sunday. she asked if we (the TKDians in HK) would like to join in. we thought it was a good idea to have a training this sat to prepare for the training next sun to avoid being whacked up by some 20 year olds..

so it's a training to prepare for a training.. make sense?? haha!!

we needed some targets for our training obviously and i went to the get it. as usual.. i stayed true to my golden rule in TKD#1 - don't care can fight or cannot, buy everything Adidas first!!

btw, my suspicions have been confirmed after the training today - 不要怀疑也不要迟疑!.. I AM OUT OF SHAPE.

let's see how it goes during the 'actual' training next sunday in HKU, can't wait!

asian cities gold cup 2011

went to watch this competition over the weekend! feels strange now that i actually live here. used to compete in this stadium in kowloon for many years! wonderful memories of this place.bumped into my opponent from 2004 and she's still competing! it's awesome. asked if she can bring me to the national team training she said YES! haha let's see how it goes :)ironically, i don't know the players from Singapore anymore except for just two of them. one very sweet pair of sisters - i've always liked them :)

is it really too bad?

today i received an SMS from an old TKD teammate. she's currently a sports trainer covering the AS-EAN University Games in Malaysia now. she's at the TKD event and was telling me about the many familiar face who were our previous opponents have now become coaches.

when asked if Singapore team won anything? her reply came like this:

"Other country's standard is way too high for Sin. But if you come you can win something"

at times like this, i feel both happy and sad. happy to know i'm still highly regarded in this sports scene and i felt really flattered. at the same time i still feel the resentment of having to leave the team without really much choice. seriously, why? why did i bow down to politics? would things have been different if i stayed determined and perservered to chase my dreams? too bad, my time is over...

but the friend's next SMS also touched my heart:

"Yes. It's too bad.. (you had to leave) But we can always be involved in other ways."

well said.

my Korean Coachee-nim

met up for a dinner with Coach Park last night. we bought her a meal at Kuishin Bo and also a box of mooncake to celebrate the mooncake festival. so happy to see her again after so many years. she is definitely someone whom i will not forget for a long long time.Park is a Korean coach we hired to teach at the National Team some 10 years back. (the "Aunty" look she has now is because she is already happily married with two kids.) she used to be really strict and fierce on her trainees! and it was something Singaporean athletes were not familiar with.

she was the first and only person who ever caned me in public in my life! yes CANE - that was how fierce she was. whenever we went overseas for competitions i had to sleep in the same room as her because i was the youngest in the team - i always felt it was so unfair - but in fact, the best room to be in is in her room. :) because that's when she taught me discipline, respect for seniors and principles of life. i still remember being the very Korean style of training, she used capital punishment on us. it doesn't help for someone who has a whole lot of attitude like me - always talking back to her - always got punished.. but these just made me stronger. last time i always think she is wayyy too long winded and too harsh on me, but as i grow up, i really appreciate her teachings.

thankyou Coach!

my 10th national gold medal

i recently bought a set of Adidas Taekwondo uniform which is retailing at $256.00 in local stores. it is made of dri-fit material and feels almost weightless! i was so out of touch with TKD - i never knew about this new invention until i saw PL and Polo wearing it. and immediately i was like.. shit! i got to have that man!! (thats so me) it was my first time wearing it on Sunday - my competition day. man, i tell you, this is the speedo suit of Taekwondo! muahaha.i fought in two matches on Sunday, i have never fought such a relaxing match before! mostly because my opponents sort of gave up on trying which was a pity really. my second opponent tried harder than the first which was really good. both matches i won by Tehnical Knock Out so the matches ended pre-maturely.to be honest, as much as i was relieved to have won, i didn't feel very happy after this competition - i feel that even though i gained much recognition from the rest of the TKD members (like players and coaches from other clubs and schools) due to my consistent performances all these years - i was never able to gain recognition from the Federation. due to politics? - partly. due to a flaw in my attitude as an athlete? - partly. due to the timing of events? - partly. well basically i'd just say it's unfortunate! *big sigh*

i cannot deny the fact that i was a little disappointed that the special Best Player award did not go to me, even though it was my 10th gold medal in the Nationals.

in any case, it was a really nice gathering with the "old folks"lanet, mich and i trying to act nerd by wearing our belts super high up.here are the group of kakis i train with during these few weeks of buildup to the competition:

my coach for this competition and also my long time childhood friend - Bygon!mel who did a fantastic job despite being off competition for 5 years!PL, we've fought with each other in competitions on a few occasions and decided that it's time we so "seperate ways" - we registered for a different weight category and both of us clinched gold :)if you have noticed from the photo, all of us are wearing Adidas uniforms...

golden rule in TKD#1 - don't care can fight or cannot, wear everything Adidas first!!

golden rule in TKD#2 - don't know how to fight nevermind, must know how to SIAM!

yes - and that is the reason how i retain my success all these years. hahaha.

the contented

i didnt have to go to work so stayed at home to watch the Olympics. it's the first time in history (at least in Singapore) that a TKD competition is being broadcasted so comprehensively - from 3pm to 9pm.

in my living room sat some top TKD players in Singapore who are as passionate (if not more passionate than me) about TKD. we watched world class players compete in the Olympics - cheering, analyzing the matches and laughing at the crap commentaries given...

in TV i saw familiar faces as my friends from other countries compete in Olympics, and saw my TKD instructor refereeing the matches... (he is the only Singapore referee in the Olympics)

what more can i ask for?

i love TKD!!

backside itchy

ok, i did the darnest thing over the weekend - i went to sign up for TKD Nationals. and if anyone can remember my blog entries in Aug 2006 - i made a very touching goodbye speech saying that i will retire. ahaha bull shit!

well, many people are giving me different views

1) you should not fight this time, because its a lose-lose situation. if you win the championship everyone will just say.."it's just another of PQ's gold medals" but if you lose, you will lose all your reputation

2) if you miss competitions, then just do it. the record is there for you to keep, so what if you lose this time? the fact that you won it 7 times consecutively wont be gone

3) dont fight lah, give young people a chance

4) fight lah, you are still very young

sigh. thankss arr...this time really is.. backside itchy.

CHEER me up

i spent the entire hot and humid sunday sweating like a pig in Yishun Sports Hall. thanks to HS who reminded me that there's a TKD competition there today. had to cancel my poly mate's lunch gathering at the very last minute because i just cannot bear to miss watching my old friends fight. felt really guilty to bail on my poly mates cos they planned to celebrate my birthday today :(

that's how much i miss it. i only like to watch good matches - which is pretty rare. honestly Singapore TKD standard has dropped so much, the good matches were from people of my batch or earlier! which is worrying because i can be considered one of the youngest in my batch already! -- come on, we need more young talents! and if only we can put politics aside i'm sure we can excel! sigh!

i went to the competition with shorts, tee shirts and a pair of flip flops. already tried to be as low profile as possible but still was spotted! they made me go in to referee the matches and even managed to find me an extra referee's uniform, a pair of track pants (it was even Adidas! they knew if it was some other brand i will REFUSE to wear, hah) and a pair of shoes!!! what the hell, really is win liao lor.

even though it was totally disgusting to be in various people's gear from top to toe... people started cheering for me when i stepped into the competition area to referee my first match. hah was weird cos you would expect people to cheer for the competitors and not the referee?? it was amusing and i enjoyed it. and yes i was so out of touch with refereeing - forgot all the hand signals and rules of the game! heh heh...

i miss those cheerings, i miss competition. i miss winning. cheer for me please.

American Gangsta

just back from watching American Gangster with a bunch of friends from work. nice show... pretty thought provoking for me. let me share my thoughts on some of the memorable quotes from the movie.

"you're too loud, you're making too much noise. listen to me, the loudest one in the room is the weakest one in the room."
mind you, there is a lot of truth in the saying "empty vessels make the most noise". there's a difference between being loud and being prominent. i want to stand out at work, but not seen as someone who is all talk and no substance...

if you had watched the movie, Frank Lucas' downfall was brought upon when he broke his own rule of staying low profile. he wore this really expensive (and loud) fur jacket to the boxing game; that was when he caught the attention of the authorities. second takeaway point for this; if you fuck up the rule, the rule fucks you up.

"quitting while you're ahead is not the same as quitting."
knowing when to stop while you're at its best... in a way i was happy i quitted Taekwondo while i was at my peak. look, 7 times consecutive national champion? i don't think anyone in Singapore would ever exceed my achievements... i was sure i could achieve even more if i continued training, if not for the dumb old assholes who are power hungry and play sports with politics. fuck them all... i'm so glad they're paying for their mistakes now. ever since the SEA Games silver i won for my country... TKD is basically nothing but just a bunch of trash who never wins in the eyes of the government...

"judges, lawyers, cops, politicians. they stop bringing dope into this country, about a hundred thousand people are gonna be out of a job."
sometimes, ethics are not the best interest for everyone. always look at the bigger picture. so what if you've done something that seemed "inethical" at that moment in time? if you piece it together...it may just make the whole world work right for everyone. don't be a stick in the mud and be all uptight about moral standards and stuffs, totally cannot stand it. look at what's best for the interest of most people...

"ya are what ya are in this world. that's either one of two things: either you're somebody, or you ain't nobody."
i've always said i wanted to be somebody...well i guess i should have have been more specific... hahaha

earn your reputation

i collected my medical report on Saturday morning and the doctor said that my bad cholesterol level was 130! just one more point and i will exceed the limit. i am only 25 yrs old this year, thankss arr...

so i decided to do something healthy in an attempt to bring my cholesterol back to a healthy level. i went back to NTU in the afternoon to help conduct a training session for the NTU TKD camp. woah seh been ion years since i exercised. tried some kicks...buay pai leh...still got the pattern there. ahahaha...but then no stamina.

anyways was quite touched when i see that i still gain quite a bit of respect from the juniors. i guess it is really important to build and upkeep your reputation because it goes a long long way. respect is earned and not something you can demand. :) hopefully i can earn respect from others at work like how i earned the respect of many in TKD. :):)

no more physio no more doc (2)

LL: maybe it has become a permanent injury so they can't do much?
me: umm...maybe lorrr.....
LL: ah! then instead of getting medical claims from the insurance company, you should claim for permanent disability leh!
me: ................

i have no idea why i am still good friends with LL.
hmm....does that mean i qualify for the next para-olympics??

sigh having headache the entire day! it is due to lack of sleep? my stiff neck? dehydration? or too much staring into the computer screen? argh. PAIN!

no more physio no more doc

the good and the bad...

the bad: it all started with; lack of sleep. went to bed at 5am this morning and totally overslept for physio appointment. so i had to take cab down...

after 10 mins of waiting, a cab came along. before i could hop in, someone tapped me from behind - a lady in her 50s asked if she could share the cab with me cos she's just going to one of the condos further up and claims she has problems walking. i was reluctant since i hate to be late for appointments but decided to be kind so i said ok.

fwah...never did i expect her condo is not only just further up...but also very further in! so after like 50 bends and 10 road humps...she finally got to her destination. next thing i know, she walked away calmly...without paying her fare! (and showed no signs of difficulty in walking!) share = split costs right?? wth...cheat my feelings...sob

the good: physio today was good. she's very good at zero-ing on the 'problematic' spots, although it often means pain inflicted on me :( then physio treated me to lunch today :) i had turkey salad but her bacon wrap seemed much more interesting! damned i made a mess of myself with the stupid cranberry salad dressing! so embarrasng!

i like treats cos i'd like to think that i must have been a nice person for someone to want to give me a treat right?...hmm...ok not exactly...*recalls how i was forced to treat JJ to ice cream cos he's a mean guy who threatened to tell everyone about my little secret if i refused to. but i felt bad for letting her treat me cos i didn't do anything to deserve it? must treat her back next time! haha

the bad again: WY called to ask how's my wrist doing.

WY: so how? what did the doc say?
me: doc said nothing much he can do, he'll give me the injection if i want
WY: need to see him again?
me: doc says no

WY: so, how was physio?
me: was good, but she said nothing much she can do either
WY: need to see her again?
me: physio said no

WY: oh, what did u do?? no one wants to see you again.
WY: no one wants to treat you because you're so irritating!
me: .......................

hmm...so, doc says no need to see him, physio says no need to see her. but, but, my hand still have not recovered!~ so who should i see?? i am so confused~

bucks $$

what an expensive day!

saw the sportzdoc at cuppage for my left wrist injury this morning...

25 mins of his consultation and medication cost me like 150 bucks! then he sent me for x-ray and that's another $32. later i got referred to this physiotherapist at cecil st, just 30 mins there meant another 80 bucks gone from my bank!

and i'm booked for another 3 sessions of physio next week. sigh...now i'm starting to wonder if my wrist is worth that much?? aiyoh...
