dinner at kimchoo with BB peeps

after stumbling upon Kim Choo restaurant - the place where they filmed the final episode of The Little Nyonya during new year's eve, i was determined to try out their pernakan cuisine! so a bunch of girls from work went with me for a dinner there...this was the exact round table were yuenniang (jeanette-aw) and aunty xiujian (cynthia koh) sat! it was so much fun because there were people like lian and GW who loves The Little Nyonya series like me too!on the 2nd floor you can also find a small retailing space selling nyonya wares and apparelsa display of spices used in peranakan cuisinethe babi ponteh we had at chilli padi was much better but the ikan assam pedas here at kim choo is tastier..

happy new year 2009!

new year's eve this year was pretty good! i left work at about 330pm and walked over the One George to meet up with LL and R. we made a reservation for a table of 9 at this Peranakan restaurant in Joo Chiat at 7pm. but we've decided to start our "The Little Nyonya trail" early! started off by going into this very traditional baba nyonya cafe for some nyonya kueh kuehs for afternoon tea.rempah udang, a traditional kueh made famous again because of the show...

notice the huge porcelain plate behind me? it appeared in The Little Nyonya's final episode, that's how we figured that it was filmed in this restaurant :)

then we walked along the streets of Katong to explore the old houses.. the colours and designs really caught my heart.if only my ancestors left us something like this! too bad, both my grandmas used to live in a Kampong and there's nothing left of it now!imagine having a house with a history of more than 80 years.. and you can pass it down to your descendants. it's a shame to know that there's not much culture/tradition or old wares my mum can leave with me, and i probably will have ZERO culture or traditions to pass to my kids in future too??anyways here's the restaurant where we had our Tok Pan-jang!! good atmosphere and it was very, very busy at the restaurant. dont know if this is the effect of the TV drama??

the restaurant was also selling lots of new year goodies.. yum!!

ok and lian's words came true.. our Tok Pan-jang (long table feast) became Tok Bulat (round table).. and it was a very big "bulat". damn it.. cannot recreate the "feel" of my Little Nyonya showwe ordered ALL the dishes that was mentioned in the TV show! we had Ikan Assam Pedas, Nyonya Chap Chye, Ayam Buah Keluak, Ngoh Heong and many more.. but most importantly.. BABI PONTEH!! this was Yue-niang's Mah Mah's favourite dish in the show, and it turned out to be our favourite dish of the night too! :) very, very nice.after dinner we retreated to LL's place, and why is it not surprising that we put episodes after episodes of Little Nyonya on TV?! heh!but of course, there is always time to pop a champagne. everyone's hopeful for a good year in 2009.
my favourite Moet & Chandon! it just tastes better, especially when you share it with friends whom you have known for more than a decade.ok now the funny part of our celebration - we started gambling blackjack throughout the night. why is it that for a moment i thought it was the Chinese New Year? ahhaha.. funnY!oh i think this is the part where Gin thought she was going to strike a blackjack!!... and she didnt. hee hee hee...thankyou all.. for the wonderful night. i had fun discussing about Little Nyonya's story plot and singing pantun with you guys!

tri la li la la baba... tri la li la la nyon-ya!!!

and The Little Nyonya has come to an end...

ok, sad. just finished watching the last episode of The Little Nyonya on mobtv. it wasn't a very nice final episode, just like how The Mum had guessed. quote The Mum "TCS pattern always like that one, at first the whole show very very nice.. then the final episode they always luan luan lai.. sian..."

if only everyday is like today...

today was a wonderful day because...

i turned up for work in shorts and slippers...

wasn't busy at all and let's just say, i had some time on my hands to do my "personal" stuff whilst at work, heh...

awesome lunch at Teochew Braised Duck stall near office, minus the CBD crowd

The Dad waited to fetch me home after work.. i consider it a LUXURY

afternoon nap from 5pm - 8pm (woke up with saliva on pillow)

just thought i'll ask if LL wants dinner, and we ate at my favourite Teochew porridge stall

randomly picked up the phone and called GW to ask if she wants to meet as well, it turns out that GW is with CF???

and suddenly there were 4 of us (secondary school pals) sitting together, totally unplanned!

next moment.. we were in a KTV lounge, and me back in CBD area in shorts and slippers again!

it's awesome, eveything was unplanned, impromptu, everyone said yes after one phone call... and this is called, friendship...

The Little Nyonya, mob-tv and my life...

recently back at mob-tv again because i'm super addicted to The Little Nyonya!!! i really really like to watch this, it's like the Peranakan version of Da Chang Jin!

me watching tv is like me living my life. i'm always dying to find out what's going to happen next yet at the same time for every episode i finish..it's one episode nearer to the end. sometimes i wish i get a sneak preview of my life before everyone else. then again, what if i realise that the development of the story is not something i had wished for? not every drama comes with a happy ending... you get interrupted every now and then by the advertisements, some are annoying and some are a pleasure to meet, i guess this is just like the different kinds of people you meet in life??

if only i get to rewind, go back in time to change certain decisions i made. if only i get to replay happy moments again and again. wouldn't it be awesome if i can skip track when at the unhappy parts. defintely helpful if i could pause at the crucial point of my life so that i get to think and plan carefully what to do or say...

as they always say 人生如戏 。 戏如人生。i think it's very well said.

is it really too bad?

today i received an SMS from an old TKD teammate. she's currently a sports trainer covering the AS-EAN University Games in Malaysia now. she's at the TKD event and was telling me about the many familiar face who were our previous opponents have now become coaches.

when asked if Singapore team won anything? her reply came like this:

"Other country's standard is way too high for Sin. But if you come you can win something"

at times like this, i feel both happy and sad. happy to know i'm still highly regarded in this sports scene and i felt really flattered. at the same time i still feel the resentment of having to leave the team without really much choice. seriously, why? why did i bow down to politics? would things have been different if i stayed determined and perservered to chase my dreams? too bad, my time is over...

but the friend's next SMS also touched my heart:

"Yes. It's too bad.. (you had to leave) But we can always be involved in other ways."

well said.

still at day 8 i guess?? - last night in beijing!

alright i lost count...

went out with EC in the day and met up with the remaining gang at night. we just had to take a few photos near the Olympic Aquatic Center and Stadium (commonly known as the Bird's Nest)i never dared dream of going to the Olympics.. i probably would have made it to the Olympics if i wasn't trained in Singapore? hmm.. still, it's far beyond my imagination. although i did dreamed that i can represent Singapore in the Asian Games it was achieavable if i hadn't left the national team..hmm..met up with XX to have our last dinner in Beijing, and walahh.. it was HOTPOT like AGAIN. gosh, i swear i'm not going to eat another hotpot until next Chinese New Year lor.this t-shirt is one of the coolest buy it was just 15 RMB! walau!!!of course must sing "One Night in Beijing" lah... next up, Hangzhou and Shanghai... then i am so done with China. heh.

day 8 - nanluo guxiang

i must have mixed up all the sequences of my trip! promised to blog regularly throughout the trip but too bad we didnt have a card reader which can read our 8GB cards. (scary huh technology? for a while we were all at 128MB cards..!) this is like an arty farty lane with speciality shops and chillout cafes. i really like modern Chinese Art. it captivates me, maybe because i sort of could relate to them.
it's a good place to spend a lazy afternoon there, having brunch in a chillout cafe before going around the small little shops, there's something for everyone there.

day 7 - peking ducking away

i swear by Da Dong. seriously it's delicious. albeit pricey, even by Singapore standards, it's worth every cent. they have a open concept kitchen where you can see the chefs waiting in line for the ducks to be ready so that they can serve it to the clients.it gets really busy even on weeknights so reservations are always encouraged. sipping on red/white wine before dinner whilst waiting for a table is really cool!!we had a good chat and some decent wine before dinner, definitely made the wait much easier.before long, we ordered our dishes and trust me, with this bunch of mates, we ALWAYS over order. but then again, maybe i'm the bad influence here??dude, we ordered like two freaking Peking Ducks. not one but TWO! plus like 10 other dishes. (ok not ten, but close. haha) i really like to eat with them. they make the food taste much more delicious than it already is.
