LL and i were in a taxi on our way home from parkway, chatting non-stop. (not surprising) i forgot at which point in time did the taxi uncle managed to enter our conversation. somehow we started this debate about the issue of banning chewing gums. (this issue is so retro, i know!) the debate got rather serious between LL and taxi uncle. soon, LL was gradually raising her voice...and her brows, probably even her blood pressure! i took a backseat and listened to them.
LL: i think the govt shouldn't ban chewing gum lor
Uncle: no, in fact i totally agree! must ban!
LL: must educate people, i went to london and europe...the people there also eat chewing gum, but they never anyhow throw what!
Uncle: but ugly singaporean don't know how to listen one, no choice!
LL: no lor i still don't agree!!!
Uncle: you too young you don't understand! govt started educating the people about chewing gums even before you're born, so many years people still anyhow stick the gums!
it went on for the entire trip. i'm the moderator, preventing them from starting a fight! when uncle says something, i support, LL says something, i support too...wah damn tiring.
but to be honest, i agree with the taxi uncle. (not that i disagree LL) of course i feel it's important to educate our people to become better citizens, to care for the environment, be socially responsible etc. but it is a fact that singaporeans are sometimes just so self centered and to a certain extent, hopeless, that our government stops trying to educate. instead, they adopt tougher, authoritarian approaches to make things happen. sad, but definitely true.
